The "wise old witch" is actually the husband's mother.... mother-in-laws are often referred to as "old witches" and attributed with rude remarks or unwanted advice. She helps contribute to the boys death by gifting him with fairy tales of brave and courgeous princes..... tales he reenacts, causing his death.
