On the Edge of a Plain Summary

On the Edge of a Plain Summary

After hours of traveling, Mitchell and his traveling companion sit to rest in the shade of mulga. Mitchell decides to tell a story of his last visit home. He had been away for eight years and never found time to write a letter home. One day, he met a ‘fool of a fellow’ who told him everyone home presumed him dead. When Mitchell arrived home his family was in mourning and they looked at him like at a ghost. When they overcame the shock, Mitchell had to promise he would not leave home as long as his ‘folks' would live. However, after one week his family ‘began to growl’ because he could not find any work to do, so Mitchell left home again. As he finishes the story, the two men rise and continue their journey.
