Oliver Twist

What does it mean that Mr. Sowerberry takes Oliver “upon liking”? (There is a specific definition/description in the book.)

It is a phrase which means in the case of a parish apprentice, the master will give him a short trial without spending too much on food for him. If it works out he will keep him for a certain agreed upon term of years to do with him whatever he wanted.
