How is Monks morally responsible for Nancy's murder?

Monks' elaborate plans and desire for inheritance put all of the action into play. Nancy puts her life at risk to save Oliver because it's the right thing to do. Had Monks never searched for the boy, conspired to have him kidnapped, and hired Bill to do his dirty work, Nancy would be alive.
