Why doesn't Slim share in the other men's dreams?

Slim isn't a drifter. While he doesn't own the ranch, he pretty much runs the operation. He has a sense of purpose on the ranch and a huge amount of respect from all the men. Slim doesn't see escaping to a place of his own either viable or appealing.
