Why does Whit want Slim to read the magazine? Why is it that Carlson “refuses to be drawn in” to the conversation?

He wants Slim to read the magazine because he thinks that the guy who used to work and bunk with them wrote an article. Carlson thinks the whole conversation is pointless and silly.
