Why does the boss think George is taking advantage of Lenny??

Guys just don't travel together. When they meet the boss, George does all the speaking. George says they are cousins and Lenny "ain't smart" because he was kicked in the head by a horse as a child. The boss thinks George is taking Lennie's money.
