Why does Steinbeck describe the setting with such detail? George complains about having to take care of Lennie. Why might George keep Lennie around?

Steinbeck likes to set context and tone. There is always meaning to be found in his settings. Sometimes the settings reflect characters and sometimes settings foreshadow events to come.
