Why does Candy feel overwhelmed when talking about the future? ( In chapter 4 )

Candy knows his days on the ranch are numbered. Much like his dog, Candy will be declared redundant. Candy is full of hope at the idea of having a small farm where he belonged to: having a sense of home. He becomes overwhelmed at the thought of this dream.
