Why do Crooks avert his eyes away from Curley’s wife? ( In chapter 4 )

Crooks is a black man living in a time when black men could be lynched simply because they were perceived (by whites) as for looking at a white woman. Curley's wife is also aggressive and dangerous. She is out to hurt someone so she can feel a little better about herself.
