THere is the whole thing about the Boss wondering why two guys might travel together. Loneliness is a way of life for these men and companionship is out of the ordinary. Curley walking in looking for his wife always holds the threat of violence. Really Curley is looking for confrontation. He sees an opportunity for Violence to pick on a mentally challenged Lennie. Also the guy that used to sleep in the bunkhouse (with the insect killer) is uses as a metaphor for all the men that come and go (transient) without solid identities.
