whom did the boss punish because geroge and lennie were late? Is the boss, as candy asserts, a "nice" guy?

The boy wasn't happy with either George or Lennie, but he gave Lennie a particularly difficult time. I wouldn't say the boss is a nice guy, but he may simply be setting a precedent.
