Who was Whitey and why is george concerned about "pant's-rabbits"? Is a bunkhouse a home? Why or why not?

Whitey is the blacksmith. Pants-rabbits are body lice, as opposed to head lice. A bunkhouse is a temporary home..... migrant workers don't often settle for very long.
