Who is the speaker of the poem?

Steinbeck chose the title, Of Mice and Men, based on a poem entitled, To a Mouse, which was written by Robert Burns. The speaker in the poem remains unnamed. The line that inspired Steinbeck was “The best laid place of mice and men often go awry”.
