Without Lennie, George could fulfill his mantra of "going into town...visit a cat house...no problem." George would essentially have the freedom of an adult not having to care for a child. At the same time George will have lost his only companion and friend. His life would feel very empty. This whole novel runs along the theme of loneliness and isolation; George would be like every other itinerant worker.
