This question largely has to do with theme. Certainly loneliness and isolation are reinforced throughout the novel. I suppose a message might be the utter necessity of having someone to love and take care of. George and Lennie's story ends tragically but Steinbeck gives us a glimpse of how important it is to love and be loves, how crucial it is to feel wanted. All of Steinbeck's stuff is depressing but the characters are so strong that I'll never forget this story.
