The tone of chapter 2 is rather oppressive. Although old Candy's welcome is warm enough but most of the other characters hold a sense of aggression. The boss of the ranch is suspicious of George and Lennie; Curley, the boss's son, is aggressive towards Lennie; Curley's wife holds a sense of impending dread.
