Candy's character illustrates the place a migrant worker's life comes to after all is said and done.... what happens when a man is no longer useful. Few of these men have families, and true friendship is rare. Candy is old, lonely, and hopeless.... at least until he gets wind of a future in George and Lennie's plan for a farm. The other workers see Candy as worthless... he's simply in the way. When men lives their lives following the work and living where their working, there is little use for much else. Farm hands don't stay around long enough to form attachments. Candy is allowed to stay because he was injured on the job.... the boss gives him that.
