The bunkhouse is not a welcoming place. There is little comfort and everything is very utilitarian. The walls were whitewashed and the floor was unpainted. George finds some insect killer,

Sleeping amidst bugs seems to be normal among these men. At one point a worker finds a magazine article that he thinks was written by one of the workers who passed through. The men cannot recollect with any detail that the man was. This speaks to the anonymity and isolation that these men feel.
