This question calls for your opinion. There is no right or wrong answer. In my opinion, and under the circumstances laid out by the author, no, her death was not avoidable. Lennie was unable to control himself and had no conception of his own strength. Curley's wife, on the other hand, put herself in a bad position. To change the ending would have interfered with Steinbeck's purpose.

Maybe if George prevented lennie touching the girl's dress in the beginning, they would never have had to leave weed and not met Curley's Wife.
