Curley is described as a little aggressive dog with more bark than bite.

Curley stepped over to Lennie like a terrier.

Lennie is given the imagery of a large bear-like creature who can, if allowed to, kill the little "terrier" dog.

Lennie covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror.
