Curley is responsible for looking out for his wife.  He fails.
Slim is responsible for taking care of the mules.  He does this himself rather than making Crooks do it all.  He is also repsonsible for Lulu, the dog.  He takes care of her by destroying the four smallest pups so that she can feed the rest.
Candy is responsible for taking care of his dog.  When it is time to let the dog go, he cannot do it and Carlson takes over.  He regrets this terribly.
George feels responsible for Lennie.  He refuses to let Curly "take care" of Lennie, so he takes it upon himself to end Lennie's life kindly.
Lennie cannot handle any kind of responsibility.  He kills his own pup, he blabs about the farm, and he loses things.
