"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they're pounding in' their tail on some other ranch. They ain't got nothing to look ahead to" (Steinbeck 13-14).

This is only a short-answer space so I can only respond to part of your question. The quote stated is related to the themes of isolation and belonging. These itinerant workers have no home or relations. They work for little pay and wander from ranch to ranch. George and Lennie at least have each other and a dream of owning a small farm. They crave both identity and a sense of belonging. George repeats this quote like a mantra. The dream is distant but it gives them hope or at least the illusion of hope.
