George and Lennie represent the motif of "strength and weakness." Lennie is weakminded and needs watching over by George who tries to keep him out of trouble. Lennie, with his enormous strength which he cannot control, is weak because he cannot control it and he knows no boundaries. The American dream for these men is their hope to someday have their own ranch and raise their own stock, but the only thing they get at the end is death when George has to shoot Lennie in order to save him from the lynching the other hands plan to give him. There will be no American dream for them.
