The ranch is a isolating and threatening place. Even Lennie, who has the emotional/intellectual maturity of a young child, feels this. They have just witnessed Curley's threatening rant in the bunkhouse. This foreshadows the darkness of events to come as well as the tragic conclusion of the story.
