How do we know that the men are really afraid of women?

Curly's wife only needed mentioning before we could see the fear in the men over women. I don't know if I'd call it fear though.... they call her a tart, and then refer to him keeping his gloves on. I don't think they're so much afraid of women as they dislike Curly's wife.
