I don't think there was much else that George could do. Most likely Curley would have insisted on running down Lennie and killing him. This would have been a traumatic death for Lennie. Slim states that even if they were to hold back Curley, Lennie would be put in a cage for the rest of his life.
"An s'pose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage. That ain't no good, George."
