When Lennie asks George for ketchup for his beans, why do you think George gets so upset with Lennie? Is George upset because there is no ketchup, or for a deeper reason (hint-it's not about the ketchup!) What evidence from chapter 1 can you give to support your opinion?

You are right, it isn't about the ketchup. George is just frustrated with his life. George has been thrust into a parental role over a grown man. Lennie has the emotional intelligence of a six-year-old. George complains that life would be so much easier without the burden of taking care of Lennie. The ketchup incident just drives George to vent his emotions.
