What does the language used by Candy to describe the stable buck tell us about the relationship between blacks and white? Does this language offer us any clues as to the period in which the novel was set?

Candy uses the word "Nigger" a few times. The reader quickly understands that offensive words like this was "normal" vernacular at the time. Many white people used this word in conversational language. The acceptance of this word tells us it was some time before the 1940's.
