Why do you think Steinbeck begins this novel with a lengthy description of the landscape? What social commentary can be found within these descriptive phrases?

If you read closely, you can see foreshadowing of the natural order of things. Animals are killing weaker animals and, although the setting is peaceful, there is violence everywhere. This foreshadows the violence that is to come at the end of the book.
