Although Lennie killed the mouse, he never meant to harm it. Lennie likes soft things but does not know his own strength. He ends up crushing it. This foreshadows both the killing of the puppy, and the killing of Curley's wife. In each case, he is attracted to softness, but inadvertently kills what he is petting.
