Curley and Carlson do not realize the depth of the feeling that George and Slim had for Lennie and how hard, yet somewhat compassionate George's murder of Lennie is. Curley and Carlson simply do not "get it" and do not understand what has just happened. They will simply walk away and continue the life we have read about throughout the book.
