Why is the boss suspicious of George and Lennie?

The boss is suspicious because George and Lennie travel together, something very rare. He also becomes suspicious that George keeps Lennie around in order to take advantage of him. Lennie wouldn't be smart enough to track his own wages, and the boss comments that this might be the reason George keeps him around.
