I think the major theme has to do with loneliness and the dream of a place to call home. Try something like this:
John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men deals with loneliness and isolation of ordinary men trying to make a living during depression era America. Steinbeck addresses people's need for companionship and a place to call home.
