It is clear that Lennie did not mean to hurt Curley’s wife. Regardless, he caused her death. If Lennie were to stand trial, what defense might he use?

In that era, he wouldn't have much of a defence. People didn't understand the mentally challenged. Slim was correct in saying that at best Lennie would end up in a cage and, "that ain't no good".
