THey are both good friends to each other. The in fact all each other has. The share a bond that transcends friendship. Although they frustrate each other we get a clear sense that they would do anything for the other. George's final act of killing Lennie was an act of love for a friend that is not understood. Lennie looks after George the only way he knows how. He is fiercely protective of him threatening to hurt and one that even "talks hurt about George."

Let's try this again,

They are both good friends to each other. They are in fact all each other has. They share a bond which transcends friendship. Although they frustrate each other, we get a clear sense both would do anything for the other. George's final act of killing Lennie is his final act of love and compassion. Lennie looks after George the only way he knows how. He is fiercely protective of him. When speaking to Crooks Lennie gets very agitated when Crooks hypothetically questions if George might not come back from town. Lennie gets angry threatening to hurt anyone who "talks hurt about George."
