George is Lennie's caretaker because Lennie is mentally impaired. George shows his power by making sure that Lennie is safe and trying to cover up Lennie's mistakes. For example, they have left their former place of employment because Lennie needed to be protected. And he kills Lennie in the end because this seems merciful compared to what the ranch hands would do if they found Lennie after he killed Curley's wife.
