In Monterey, there is a place named after Steinbeck. Is that when he was writing a book?

I was in Monterey for 2 days and a small town by the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) was named after Steinbeck. Is this true, and was that when he was writing his books? If so, please tell me which books he was writing in Monterey.
