How/why have Crooks accumulated more possessions than the other men? ( In chapter 4 )

Crooks has worked at the ranch for a long time. Unlike most of the men coming through the ranch, Crooks isn't transient. He is forced to stay in one place because of his crooked back and because he is black. It is not easy from a man like Crooks to travel from place to place.
