Steinbeck uses the Great Depression as the setting for his story. The men in this story are transient itinerant workers. They all dream of a place to call home. What little money they save is easily spent or not nearly enough to start a stable life. These men feel lonely and isolated. They dream about a future where they can have a home and have a sense of independence. We see this when George continually repeats the story of a dream farm to Lennie.
