Candy and his dog have a codependent relationship, that is, both of them are dependent on each other. They are both old and decrepit, seemingly falling apart with age.

George and Lennie are also co-dependent. The foursome also share similarities. When Candy remarks about how he should have been the one to put his dog down, it is because of their close bond that he feels this way. George is similar to Candy when he realizes he must be the one to shoot Lenny, who killed his wife. It is because of the close bond the two shared that George must be the one to do it, as Candy should have with his dog.
