How does Slim comfort George after he shoots Lennie?

Slim is the only character who really understands the depth of friendship between George and Lennie. Slim immediately comforts George when the men find him with Lennie's body. The other men assume that he has killed Lennie in self defence, but Slim understands better-

'Slim came directly to George and sat down beside him, sat very close to him. 'Never you mind,' said Slim. 'A guy got to sometimes.'(ch6)

Slim sees that George has shot his friend rather than leave him to a fate worse than death.
