how does george explain his relationship with lennie?

He tells Slim about Lennie's aunt taking care of him. She died and George promised to take care of Lennie. I think that George, like everybody in this novel, is isolated. Lennie isn't that great for adult conversation hence solitaire provides George's only relief.
