In Chapter Four, it becomes clear that Curley's wife dislikes her husband. She tells the men that she knows he was beaten in a fight - that his injured hand did not result from a machine accident. Lennie then eagerly tells her "about the rabbits", though she dismisses their plan as a pipe-dream. While Lennie is talking, Curley's wife notices the bruises on his face, and she deduces his role in Curley's injury. She then flirtatiously congratulates Lennie on bringing Curley down a notch. She is obviously not a woman in love.
