George has been told by Candy that Curley's wife has 'got the eye' even though she has only been married for a fortnight. This makes George cautious when she enters the barn saying that she is looking for Curley. Her flirtatious gestures make it clear that she is not simply trying to find her husband. Sensing that she is trouble, George is curt and dismissive of her.

Lennie, however, is captivated by her. He studies her body as she leans provocatively against the door. Heavily made up and in red ostrich feather shoes, Lennie is immediately attracted to her beauty and cannot take his eyes off her.
