Crooks has a crooked back caused by a kick from a horse.

Crook got his name because he was kicked in the back by a horse which then gave him the appearance of having a crooked back.Crooks is the stable hand who takes care of the horses and lives by himself because he is the only black man on the ranch. He is used in the book to show the effects of discrimination.
