Explain the implications of Steinbeck's not giving Curley's wife a name?

Many people think that Steinbeck didn't give Curley's wife a name because it was a statement of her position in the household. She was seen as property..... as Curley's property. Others say no name is needed because she is the only woman in the story. In my opinion, there wasn't an underlying purpose in her lack of name..... she was simply Curley's wife.
