Most of these transient male workers only look after themselves. They generally feel lonely and isolated. George cares for Lennie. He has purpose and responsibility outside his own needs and desires. Despite George's frequent lamentations about caring for Lennie, he truly loves him. This love makes George more of an empathetic individual.
