Crooks is threatened by Curley's wife. She inflicts her own pain onto Crooks because Crooks is more vulnerable than the other men. She threatens to tell the others things that will get him lynched. In the end, Crooks decides that there are no happy endings for a guy like him: a man of colour in a white man's world.
