Steinbeck's story takes place during the depression. Many men travelled from ranch to ranch looking for work. They usually made a little money but at the end of the month took their $50.00 and went to the nearest town. They would spend it on girls, alcohol, and gambling. These men are desperately lonely and isolated. They have little to dream about or look forward to. Saving money for a future they have given up on is too difficult.
